Contradictions in the bible

  • Question: Contradictions in the bible

    Every time I think I know, after praying, what a verse means, I either run across another verse that tells me different, or someone tells me that what I take it to mean is wrong, and will argue no matter what I say. And I'm talking full blown christians, not someone who just claims to know the bible. This is really frustrating me now. If I didn't believe in God as strong as I do, all this would surely leave doubts about His existance. I can see exactly why, and how, people can say that the bible contradicts itself. For example;

    1)1 Thessalonians 4:16

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

    contradicts;

    2 Corinthians 5:8

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

    And then there is salvation;

    2)John 6:44

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

That verse tells me that God only calls some to Him, not everyone. Yet,

    2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

On the first contradiction, one verse tells us that we will be dead until we are raised up. But another verse tells us that we will immediatly go to Him? WHAT IS THE TRUTH???????? WHICH IS IT???????

On the second contradiction, it tells us that God does not "draws" everyone. But another verse tells us that He does not want anyone to perish. Again, contradicting each other. And don't even get me started about the subject of losing salvation. I read some verses that tells us that people cannot lose thier salvation, but then I read other verses that tells us that people can. This is really getting on my nerves. so, explain to me, if you can, why is there all this contradiction in the bible?

Answers to this Question

  • 1 thes 4 is speaking of the rapture while 2 cor 5 is talking about the death of a christian and going to be with his lord in heaven. john 6 with 2 pet 3 is simply saying that i must recognize my utter helplessness to save myself and ask jesus to bring me to the father for my salvation. if i ask jesus to draw me, james 4.7 to 8, then he will. it all depends on my faith and praying according to gods will. if i get on the same page with christ, he will draw me to himself. jer 29.11 to 13. groundwire.net

  • 1)1 Thessalonians 4:16

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Okay lets go back a little bit for this answer.

This chapter is talking about the resurrection that is going to take place at the last trumpet. Last trumpet is number 7 when the resurrection of the just happens. Not all will be resurrected but some will be changed in a twinkling of an eye. Meaning they are going to be on the ground but also changed into immortal bodies in a twinkling of an eye.

    2 Corinthians 5:8

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

This is in no way contradicting the other scriptures bud.

Okay lets look at the context of this chapter.

It talks about being in Heaven clothed with immortality rather than mortality. This isn't contradicting. Paul is simply saying that he would prefer to be home with the lord away from his current body (which is going to the grave) and present with Jesus and God Almighty.

They aren't contradicting each other and the people who are trying to help you, whoever they are, should be able to walk with you through this or at least be praying for you.

Okay now with the next verse.

    John 6:44

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Okay what this is saying is that the Almighty draws men and women to Jesus Christ to recieve life. Jesus wishes that all would come to repentance and full knowledge of Him. But does that happen? No not all their are some that love sin and hate righteousness and forgiveness.

Next verse that seems to contradict it....

    2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

He is waiting on the sinners to turn from their evil ways and receive life through Jesus Christ.

They are slightly similar topics but they are also slightly different.

    Remember....

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.James 1:5

  • You are a child, as am i, who knows the book better than the author? Its best to be taught from the Holy Spirit.... Continue to press in bud God bless ya

  • Their are things in the bible that are only spiritual and their are things that are strictly physical and their are things that are both. Keep the faith and fight with your armor on. Also remember to let the armor bearer, Jesus Christ, to fit the armor just for you. Their are two shields in battle. One on your forearm to withstand small attacks and arrows so that you can thrust with your sword. Then their is the bigger shield which is faith to stand behind while the enemy tacks on the attacks. Jesus will help you if you keep the faith and believe. Jesus can also whisper to you if your not a follower but it is much harder. It may be the Holy Spirit though....

  • You can choose to be bound up in religion or have a relationship. I know whom I have believed in and am persuaded ta heis able to keep that which Ive committed unto him against that day. I know my redeemer lives because of the peace I received when I finally surrendered

  • The bible was authored by many, over several hundred years. Copies of copies were made, and different language translations. Making matters even more confusing, around 325 ad the council of nicea decided to standardize the bible by taking a consensus and deciding what books should be left in the bible and what books should be taken out. That was also the year that it was decided, by men, that jesus was not just a noble man, but the son of god in a literal sense. Many christian churches taught the first few centuries that jesus did not rise again, rather he remained dead; his job fulfilled.

Many christian apologetics will tell you not to get hung up on the small details, but rather look at the big picture. I couldn't agree more- but I came to a different conclusion!

  • Thank you guys. I apologize for the words I used, I was frustrated at the time. As for my belief in God's existance, I know He is real. Thank you for clearing up the contradictions. I was told one time that the bible does not actally have contradictions, because the Holy Spirit clears it up for us. But I was having a hard time.

  • It is so important to ask God what a certain piece in scripture is for. It may seem to go against the others but it also might need to be seen from a different side/point of view. Be very careful who you put your trust in.

  • From a personal testimony i have found many scriptures that seem to contradict especially when it comes to the commandments and such.

But once again their is an explanation for each scripture. So keep the faith and whenever you come across a series of scriptures remember to ask the Author for the interpretation. You may receive something that is completely unique and just for you.

Constant seeking is what the Lord is after. Day by day this battle is fought and its a long one. Remember to keep your shields up bud God bless ya

  • @ mythology.... Do you see love, joy, peace, and forgiveness in the world?

Okay lets look at the other side.

Do you see death, unforgiveness, and hatred towards what is good and right in the world?

If you answered yes to these questions then you are seeing the after life being played out right before your eyes in a small degree.

If you are having troubles believing in God and Jesus Christ then ask sincere questions. okay?

Hope that you come to know Him bud.

    ~Blessings and Hope

  • I went through this the first couple of a years of bible study but as I learned to understand in my Spirit by The Holy Spirit each, revelation of understanding came, there is no, not one contradiction in the bible, stay the course, always pray for understanding, stay away from the world the flesh and the devil walk by the spirit and let God do what He does, They called Jesus 'master' meaning "teacher", call Him by this name before every bible study and thank Him for the understanding, that your spiritual eyes will be opened.

  • =) The second contradiction isn't a contradiction at all it is explaining WE CAN NOT GO TO HEAVEN BUT THRU CHRIST WITH THAT BEING SAID GOD GIVES US CHANCE AFTER CHANCE TO COME TO HIM SO THAT WE CAN BE SAVED WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND LIVING TO SEE ANOTHER DAY IS ANOTHER CHANCE. THERE ARE GOING TO BE AND HAVE BEEN PPL TO GO TO HELL AND PARISH Y.....NOT BECAUSE GOD DOESN'T GIVE ANOTHER CHANCE BUT BECAUSE PPL CHOSE NOT TO COME TO GOD CHOSE TO BE LOST. THE BIBLE DOESN'T CONTRADICT ITSELF THE OLD TESTAMENT AND NEW TESTAMENT MAY SEEM DIFFERENT AND I SEE IT AS GOD BEING SOME WHAT CUTTING US SLACK SIMPLY BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHAT TYPE OF WORLD WE ARE IN AND THAT'S ALSO Y HE SENT JESUS TO DIE FOR US.....YOU MAY WANT TO CHANGE THE VERSION OF THE BIBLE YOU ARE USING AT FIRST I DIDN'T LIKE THE KING JAMES VERSION BUT I PRAY B4 I READ MY BIBLE SO I CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I am READING. WE ALL GO THRU IT BUT IF YOU ASK GOD FOR HELP TO UNDERSTAND AND TO GIVE YOU WISDOM TO KNOW HE WILL TRUST ME :) HOPE THIS HELPED

  • "the Mark of the Beast" is the enforcement of SUNday worship!
    Vatican's "New World Order"
"Sunday laws must be enforced"- quoted as "principles contained in the Constitution" of the orginial organization, (then called The American Sabbath Union), cited in The Lord's Day Alliance, Twenty-fifth Report, page 5
    source : Remnantofgod.org
    SDRministries.org

  • Lastdays, what you just posted is false doctrine.
In that Jesus became our Sabbath according to Hebrews 4, we can worship on ANY day of the week. Sunday was chosen by the early church because that was the day our Savior arose from the dead.
The Old Testament shadow was so strict because of what it represented, in that there is NO WORK that can obtain your salvation. Salvation is found in Jesus alone. And since Jesus has fulfilled that law completely, you are free to perform physical labor on any day of the week so long as you are not trying to earn your salvation by working.
I would avoid those web sites in the future if I were you...

  • Salvation that is correct heavy you are right in that no works can achieve salvation by man alone.

But you are wrong when it comes to God's everlasting signs being "lifted". The sabbath is a sign and its very important. If you claim that the sunday worship is false doctrine, which it is. Then you also must realize what the true doctrine is and what day that is.

The book of psalms says the law of the Lord brings Joy and restores the soul. So don't think lawlessness is the way to go. God set certain things in place and they are an everlasting sign. The sabbath, saturday, is an everlasting covenant and sign. It is from morning to evening and that time is very important to God. Especially when it comes to obeying Him like a child.

God had the best for israel at heart when He made those laws and commandments. He is not just a mean God who puts all these rules without purpose. If you claim to worship the living God then it is equally important to heed His commandments and follow them.

  • @ heavy... Please answer whether it be answer A or B

The question is what was added because of transgression of the law of God?

    Galatians 3:19

What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator.

    A) All of the commandments

    B) The sacrificial system and the levitical priesthood

  • (hint) It mentions it in Hebrews.

  • If i may sound like im trying to make you sound stupid and point fingers at you than thats not what i was meaning for it to accomplish.

I heard a quote one time and it said something close to...

If you can't bring it down to where a child can understand it, then your not ready to proclaim it.

Something close to the child thing but i added the other part.

    ~ Blessings

  • Davara,
I pointed out very clearly that Jesus was our Sabbath. For that reason there is no need to set apart any specific day for worship. We worship on Sundays now because it is convenient. Some churches worship on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday regularly, and some have services on other days of the week.

It is not important to honor a day, it is important to honor our Salvation.

And regarding your question, you are asking a faulty question as the answer is A AND B. There was no law to the covenant until God added it with Moses in the desert. From Abraham to Moses there was NO law. It and all of the other things were added.
The problem with the 10 commandments was that they are external and didn't change the person.

The people could violate those laws in their thinking as lonng as they didn't violate them in action. But we have the real laws written in our hearts and minds such that if we start to think about stealing, murdering or any of those sins, our conscience rises up in us and condemns those thoughts.

That is why we don't need any external law if we are truly born again because the conscience of our born again nature will warn us if we even consider sinning.

That is why it says in Hebrews 12:8 that if you be without (not having ) chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
If your conscience doesn't rise up and tell you you that you are about to sin, then you are not a true child of God.

  • Jesus is our sabbath in our spirit man. We can now rest in Jesus knowing that our salvation is set if we do not fall back and live in lawlessness without repentance.

How much rest in your spirit man did you have when you were an unbeliever? That is the rest that it is speaking of.

IF you are going to add God's sanctified day which He declared would still be intact whenever the new heaven comes to be void then by your own admission your claiming that God changes.

  • This sabbath is an "everlasting sign" if the term everlasting is in that sabbath and its not everlasting how much faith can you put in "everlasting" life?

  • IF your beliefs clashes with the bible then you need to change and seek wisdom.

  • About the question that asked what added because of transgression of the law of God?

The answer is B and its quite easy to see it.

Whenever Israel sinned what did God put into place right after that? The sacrificial system and the levitical priesthood. A way to come back to God through repentance. That pointed to Christ Jesus their is now no need to the sacrificial system. That was not the perfect system.

    Hebrews 10:5-10
    New International Version (NIV)
5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[a]
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  • Psalm 40:6

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.

  • You need to see the difference between the law that was added because of transgression and the law that God set into place for the good of the people. He has your best at heart. Those commandments are for the best not the worst.

  • The commandments of God are NOT A CURSE.

So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.

    Psalm 19:7

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

    Psalm 1:2
But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

He called it a "delight" NOT a cursing. Therefor we should too.

  • May the Lord rebuke you if you are still obstinate!

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26

  • @ heavy when you see Noah in the bible being told to gather groups of 7, in pairs, of the clean animals onto the boat. But only gather one pair of 2 of the unclean animals. What do you see there? Do you see lawlessness? Or do you see the very heart of God saying hey bud this foods aren't fit for your consumption therefor be set apart and made Holy......

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7
    New International Version (NIV)
6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.

Look around and it can be very clear on what kind of spirit is already active.

    its lawlessness evil

And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’Matthew 7:23

  • You obviously think you have all the answers, I just hope that no one reading your posts are deceived with your false teachings.

  • Im sure God is happy which ever days you worship him...... Give praise Monday-Sunday

  • He is very happy with people who worship Him. Their is another way of worship too though and its been helping me draw nearer and stay close. Its truly been drawing me closer to God. Why wouldn't i want to share it?

Their are certain things that are being taught today and currently this teaching about lawlessness is what pleases the ear. But its not sound biblical doctrine.

  • So the teachings about righteousness, holiness, and judgement you dont like? And you call it false doctrine. But when you answer who is the God that you worship you would point to the Eternal. Well He doesn't change His mind. Everlasting means everlasting, if everlasting life wasn't everlasting like you say the term everlasting sabbath is then we are ALL in a world of torment very soon....

  • How long do you plan to have your everlasting life heavy?

If it doesn't last for the sabbath how can you be sure that God wont change without regards to your salvation?

Your logic doesn't trace over into child like understanding bud. You need to change what you believe.

  • with regards to your*

  • Ugh the word happy is wrong. A better word to say that God enjoys/ it brings joy to His heart....

Sorry about that... I dont like to use happy.

  • Theirs so much more to the character of God.

    God bless ya

  • If the first covenant and all that came with it was eternal, then why was it superseded with the New Covenant?
The fact is, the first covenant was flawed because of man's sin nature. That is why man could not keep the laws, he was sold under the slavery of sin.
But if we are born again of His divine nature, we have His holiness and righteousness in our spirit and we are free from having to commit sin and in fact our conscience will tell us if we try to sin or even think about it.

The problem with the 10 commandments was that they were external and only could be kept externally. The Jew could look at the woman with lust and as long as he didn't fornicate outwardly with her, he still kept the law, but Jesus tells us as born again believers that if we look on her to lust after her, we are guilty because we know better because our conscience tells us it is wrong.

Besides that, Hebrews 4 clearly tells us that Jesus is our rest, our Sabbath. And having fulfilled the Sabbath, we no longer have to hold a day as holy, but Jesus and our salvation experience is what we consider as holy and for that reason we need not avoid physical labor on Saturday.
I assure you that I have as much fellowship with Him on Saturday while working as I do on Sunday or any other day of the week. And He is just as pleased with me on Saturday when I labored as He was with me on Sunday when I worshipped Him in church!

  • Heavy i want to encourage you to talk with a jew and what are some questions they may have about accepting Jesus as their savior.

One of them being is they hold the old testament in high regard. Especially the first five books of the old testament. They understand that everlasting means everlasting. So a savior coming who came to get rid of what was everlasting would be a FALSE MESSIAH.

Thats just one of many questions that the jews have and rightly so. Each Jew should ask many questions because it is for their faith and soul.

No cheapskate wants to give his or her soul over to something that is false. Unless of blackmail or just being an idiot or whatever....

  • Amen Heavy

Im sure God is happy which ever days you worship him...... Give praise Monday-Sunday
